Now it's fila shoes like every other fashion kid on the street is wearing the big, chunky Fila. The company has both contemporary trends and nineties nostalgia covered: logo-mania, athleisure, and, thanks to its spike-soled Disruptor II, the rave shoe. Fila didn't necessarily inspire these trends, but it found itself perfectly positioned to take advantage of them. "Fila was like a fifth-tier brand," Griffey told me. "It wasn't Nike, it wasn't Adidas, it wasn't Reebok. You know what, And1 was cooler than Fila." It was a bit of a shock that it was Fila who made the strongest move to sign Hill out of college. At the time, Fila had started to make a bigger push into the performance basketball market, but had yet to prove themselves as a formidable threat against Nike, Reebok, and the other major players at the time.

Miraculously though, Hill was able to fight through it all, playing 19 seasons in the NBA before announcing his retirement this past June after a one-year run with the Clippers. It's tough to speculate on what could have been had those injuries not slowed him down during his prime years, but soon Fila will be bringing back, not only his first fila disruptor 2 signature model, the Grant Hill 1, but also a wave of nostalgia that conjures memories of Hill's first year of electrifying the NBA hardwood. In addition to his roles on the hardwood and in the boardroom, Grant Hill also signed on with the agreement that a portion of the proceeds of his shoe sales go back to the community. Hill and Fila donated sizable chunks to local fila sneakers Detroit recreation programs, further cementing the young star's reputation as a man of character and a shining ambassador for the professional sports world.

It bears mentioning, then, that Fila is by no means in financial trouble today, and they're even running at a profit in the US, according to records. But given the brand's Italian roots  and its tennis heritage heyday of the 1970s when it had an endorsement deal with tennis legend Bjorn Borg in his prime  it's regrettable to have witnessed the brand become something of a bargain bin athletic name over the last few decades. Right now, Fila is certainly perceived as such in western markets. A storied brand that's all but lost relevance in a rapidly changing sportswear marketplace. It continues to suppress its rich tennis history. Relaunch Fila as a confident, upmarket activewear label that celebrates both its Italian roots and its tennis pedigree.

In order for these changes to stick, and for more technical innovation to continue pour forth, Fila would need to install a completely new fila shoes womens set of R&D and design standards before ramping up in scale to compete with an Under Armour. Lastly, scrap the shoes. Right now, 90 percent of Fila's sales in the US are shoes. But they're cheaply made, and Nike and Adidas dominate the market on the high-end. It's an uphill battle to combat that hegemony. Start first with a core of technical and tastefully designed upscale tennis performance clothing, and then perhaps think about getting back into the shoe game. The current logo brings back memories of the  90s Obrázek when Fila in the US was anything but premium.
